Your home’s front entry is like it’s “face”. In other words, it’s the first thing that most people will notice when passing or approaching your house. That said, how does your home’s “face” appear to the world right now? Maybe you’ve already got a nice front door. Perhaps you’ve even painted it in your favorite cheery color. If so, you’re on the right track, but your front entry needs more than a little “lipstick” to really POP for a visitor to your home. Here are some ways to give it a professional “makeup artist’s” touch so that it doesn’t just look presentable, but AMAZING!
Remodel It
You want your front entry to make people approaching it feel welcome, and one way to accomplish that is with a burst of bright color. Yellow is traditionally a welcoming color. It’s the color women from many cultures traditionally used to welcome their men back from war. It’s also cheerful and well-suited to period-style homes like Colonials or Victorians, as well as a modern or mid-century-style home. Don’t like yellow? Try red, lime green, yellow-orange or even a bold blue hue.
Next, consider adding some sidelights — those long narrow “windows” that run parallel to a front door. That’ll give your front entry more presence and impact. It’ll also let a little more light into your foyer, which is a bonus since many tend to be somewhat dimly lit, at least where natural light is concerned. (If you want light without losing any privacy, choose textured glass.)
Speaking of glass, does your front door have a “window” or small panes of glass in it? Why not replace the old glass — or add some new decorative door glass — to give it a fresh new look? You can even monogram it with the first letter of your last name for an extra-special and personal touch!
Go Big
Oversized elements have the potential to make an instant impact. Splurge on a spectacular glazed pot (or two) that you can plant each season with elements that make your front entry pay tribute to the moment. For example, in the springtime you can plant it with some bright spring bulbs or colorful pansies, a mixture of warm-weather flowers and foliage in the summertime, mums or asters and gourds in the fall, and a decorated topiary or an evergreen sapling in the winter.
You can also make an impression with some oversized house numbers, while simultaneously making it easier for people looking for your home — like an ambulance, police or a fire truck — to find it more easily. Light the numbers, and they’ll be able to spot them even after dark.
Create Symmetry and Balance
To give it a bit more presence, consider adding some symmetry to your front entry design with an elegant urn on either side of the door. This creates a sense of balance and dresses it up. For height, you can plant the urns with topiaries, or simply create different floral displays to welcome and honor each season as it arrives.
Multiply the Impact
If you have steps leading up to your front entry, and they’re wide enough, consider lining them with sturdy containers filled with colorful flowers, multiplying their impact. Similarly, you can group pots at on either side at the foot of the stairs to create a garden-like effect that can change with each season.
Don't Forget the Finishing Touches
Details matter! Add a beautiful welcome mat, a seasonal wreath and, if you have room, include a chair and a small side table to give your front entry a friendly and welcoming aura. Also consider a new handset for a polished off look for your doorway.
