Ohhh, Father’s Day.
What is a father? A father is someone who teaches you things, someone who is there for you as you are growing up, and the go-to guy for home improvements! There are many men out there that live for DIY projects and the next big home improvement so this father’s day, we say put dad to work.
Just kidding… well kind of.
Below we have included four DIY projects that can be completed in just one weekend. Each of these projects will assist in upgrading the look of your home, and the best part is they can all be completed by the DIY dad’s out there! Pick one of these projects and gift your father the materials he will need to complete this weekend project. You’ll get bonus points for creativity and for doing the hard part – shopping. The projects below are listed in order according to skill level, so there is bound to be a project out there for every dad.
1. Add an Accent Wall
Source: The Spruce
Revamp an area of your home by adding an accent wall. Colored accent walls are commonly seen in living areas or bedrooms, but can be added anywhere! This is a great home improvement project for the more “mature” fathers out there that enjoy a good project, but cannot handle too much strain or heavy lifting. Dad will need:
- Paint
- Drop Cloth
- Paint Brush
- Roller Frame
- Roller Covers
- Paint Trays
- Step Ladder
- or opt for a Paint Tray Set
2. Step-Stone Pathway
Create a pathway in your backyard. Maybe it will lead to the pool or the side entrance of your garage, or maybe it will just be for looks. This DIY weekend project is simple. Map out where the stones will lay, use a garden knife to dig up the grass in those spots and pack down some sand before setting your stepping stone in place. A sharp garden knife will ensure a clean and crisp cut. Dad will need the following materials:
- Stepping Stones
- Soft Sand
- Sharp Garden Knife
3. Patio Door Update

Enhance your backyard views and increase the energy efficiency of your door at the same time. The best part about this update is NO MORE DUSTING the blinds. Patio door blinds are blinds that are protected in-between two pieces glass. With simple fingertip control, you can open the blinds to let some light in or slide the control to open your blinds completely. This easy DIY install even has a video for dad to follow along with. Materials to complete this update include:
- Patio Door Blinds
- Screwdriver
- Tape Measure
- Utility Knife
- Safety Glasses
4. Wood Garden Bench
Source: Homesthetics Magazine
Let your father put his power tools to good use this year. This weekend project will leave you with additional outdoor seating and a unique homemade piece of furniture that dad can brag about for years to come. This outdoor garden bench looks much more complex than it actually is.
How to Construct: The two ends are constructed just as we used to construct Lincoln Logs (possibly with dad), in a hatching back and forth pattern. Once you reach your desired height, minus 4 inches, you will begin constructing the seat. We recommend making each “end cap” 24×24 inches and the middle bench portion 48 inches long by 24 inches deep. For a similar plan with in-depth directions, check out Lowe’s outdoor bench and planter plans.
Dad will need:
- 20-25 Pieces of Lumber (all 2×4)
- Wood Glue
- Drill
- Miter Saw
- Drill Bits & Drivers
- Screws
- Detail Sander (avoid hand-cramping)
